Last saturday the third championship title in a row was secured in Wiener Neustadt. The Stade women remain undefeated in the Women's Sevens Series, making history in the process.
Neuklosterwiese in Wiener Neustadt. The signs were good for coach Fabian Weidinger's team ahead of the last of four tournaments in the Women's Sevens Rugby Series. Stade had recorded 9 wins in the three tournaments so far and went into the final tournament in Wiener Neustadt as leaders of the table. Nevertheless, they did not want to take any of the games lightly and wanted to play with full concentration.
Stade faced the previously undefeated ladies of Bellatrix Budowice in the very first game. Fabian Weidinger had already prepared his ladies intensively for this highlight of the season in training. The Czech side got off to a strong start and put the Viennese side under a lot of pressure, who had to defend outnumbered for longer than expected due to a yellow card. Despite being outnumbered, the Czech side failed to score a try, allowing Stade to break free through Louise Fournier and score the first points. The game was ultimately won 22:0 thanks to a successful second half.
The opponents in the second game were the team from Celtic. The aim here was to establish a clear lead right from the start. A comfortable points lead was quickly established. Coach Fabian Weidinger used the second half to rotate and bring in fresh players. Stade continued to dominate the game and won 58:0.
In the last game of the tournament, the ladies of Spielgemeinschaft Steiermark awaited the Stade women. The two teams had already played an exciting duel two weeks earlier in Graz. Graz dominated the first half with possession, but were unable to score any points. Stade, on the other hand, defended well, played cleverly and straightforwardly. The final score was 24:0 for the previous champions.
There was great jubilation after the final whistle. The treble perfect. “It was an incredible team performance at the end of the day. We wanted to show our best rugby and we did that. Every single player stuck to the game plan and executed it perfectly. I'm incredibly proud of the performance,” said coach Fabian Weidinger. It was also a special moment for captain Kaja Fournier: “It was a great final tournament here in Wiener Neustadt and a great team performance today. We had a lot planned for the first game against Bellatrix and it worked out really well. Now it's time to celebrate"
